The WRC was founded in 1883 as a charitable organization to assist Union veterans of the American civil War.
The medal is a Maltese cross with the initials F.C.L which stands for "Fraternity, Charity, Loyalty"
The year 1883 is visible on the bottom of the Cross which is the year the organization was founded.
The letters WRC are also visible on the arms of the cross.
